Our members open up the vast world of information and repertoire in their daily interactions with students, educators, researchers, musicians, and the general public. Heute vor hundert Jahren, am 31. Januar 1917, wurde ein Komponist geboren, der mit seiner Musik bis heute viele Kinderohren prägt. Seine Titelmelodien zu unzähligen Filmen sind heute noch berühmt, doch der Mensch hinter den Kompositionen ist den meisten Hörern unbekannt.

The following is a list of notable anniversary dates for the first quarter of 2017, compiled by Katharina Jerusalem, intern at the Notenarchiv des Westdeutschen Rundfunks (WDR), Cologne.
David Robert Jones wäre am 8. Januar 2017 siebzig Jahre alt geworden. Viel bekannter ist die Ikone der Pop-Kultur allerdings unter dem Namen David Bowie, der an Jim Bowie, einen Kämpfer der Texas Revolution, angelehnt ist. Durch seinen Vater trat David Bowie schon als Kind mit Rock’n’Roll in Kontakt. Über Little Richards Song „Tutti Frutti“ sagte er: „Ich habe Gott gehört!“. Doch auch sein Halbbruder Terry, den der schüchterne Junge David immer für seine rebellischen Züge bewunderte, führte ihn an Jazz und US-Beat heran.
