Zusammenfassung:

The book is the result of many years of study of gangs and other forms of traditional village singing in the Dinaric region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with special emphasis on Herzegovina and Dalmatian Zagora, primarily for the purpose of drawing up a doctoral dissertation.
Ganga is still one of the most vibrant traditional music forms in the area. Although the gang's unadorned ear appears as an unorganized sound and often deny its ability to perceive and describe it as a musical form, it is for members of rural society one of the most expressive forms of manifesting their own culture and powerful symbols of their identity.
The book begins with the presentation of fundamentally contradicted attitudes about the gang's experiences among members of different social strata - urban and rural. It then points to the results of musical and anthropological analysis of gangs, recorded and studied in thirty villages in the mentioned area, taking into account above all the information received from the representatives of the rural society. In this way, the discovery of the musical and negligent values of gangs and of the symbolic meanings of the represented musical elements are established. It also points to the subtle level of knowledge of their music among the gang's performers and the peculiar ways in which they express their musicality. The book also gives an insight into the application of the anthropological approach to the study of gangs, in order to emphasize that this is not just a peculiar musical but also a social phenomenon.
The book is accompanied by musical transcripts of gangs and a CD with 35 original footage taken by the author on the field in his research work in the 70s of the last century.
