18. Juni 2017: Happy Birthday, Sir Paul!

The following is by Katharina Jerusalem, intern at the Notenarchiv des Westdeutschen Rundfunks (WDR), Cologne. Her version in English follows, and an Italian translation by Katharina with support from Hansi Dequal is after that.

Was wäre ein Musikstar außerdem ohne Verschwörungstheorien?

Happy Birthday, Sir Paul!

Everybody knows, of course, Paul McCartney, who was born in Liverpool in 1942, from his early years as one of the front men of the popular band The Beatles. But his 75th birthday on 18 June 2017 is the perfect occasion to give some attention to his solo career. Luck alone was not the reason for his fame but an immense portion of talent and modesty in combination with wit and business acumen.

To enumerate the Beatles’ successes would seem like an endless story and so it’s best to start at the end of it. In 1969 the Beatles split up after some time of conflicts and pictures of McCartney’s marriage with the photographer Linda Eastman went around the world. That broke many girls’ hearts even twice. As time went by the four “mop tops” became reconciled again but that wasn’t predictable in the 70s at all. Who gets the Beatles’ assets after their breakup? The legal position was unclear, which put a lot of strain on McCartney, and it lead him and his wife to retreat to Scotland. There he recorded his solo debut. Songs like "The Lovely Linda" and "Maybe I’m Amazed" made this self-titled album one of his most important. When he founded the band Wings together with his wife a little later he found himself under pressure. The Beatles’ early mistakes were made in small clubs in Hamburg while McCartney stood in the public eye with Wings and his solo career from the beginning. Nonetheless concerns had been unjustified because everything he touched became a huge success. However it’s often forgotten that he is more than just an ex-Beatle. In 1973 he delivered the title song of the James Bond movie Live And Let Die and tours with Wings were hits. In the 80s he worked together with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Elvis Castello, and with the latter he made the album Flowers In The Dirt. Strokes of fate like the death of his wife and his colleague George Harrison and watching the attacks of September 11, 2001 out of his apartment in New York led to the LP Driving Rain.

In his Beatles days he had already been considered a first-rate composer, bassist and multitalented instrumentalist because he also assumed the piano, the guitar and the drums besides singing and playing the bass. Classics like "Yesterday," "Hey Jude" or "Penny Lane" originate from McCartney. But also his solo career contributed to the development of music. He, for example, helped pop music emerge from its strict frame by adding classical elements to it. He hazarded to try different styles including reggae. In 1991 he composed his first oratorio for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society but also wrote a more electronic album (Strawberries Oceans Ships Away).

What would a famous musician be without conspiracy theories? Since 1966 the rumors have circulated that McCartney died in a car accident and was replaced by a twin. This assumption was based on an article from a student newspaper and the fact that he holds his cigarette in his left hand on the cover of Abbey Road despite being a right-hander. If one played the song "Getting Better" backwards one would allegedly hear “Paul is dead”. But McCartney does not have the time for ridiculous speculation because he also focuses on the protection of nature and the environment, and is active as a painter in addition to making music.

Appropriate to his upcoming birthday the WDR Funkhausorchester is giving a concert of a variety of Beatles songs in Cologne on 30 June 2017, where definitely some of Paul McCartney’s catchy melodies and complex harmonies can be heard, too.

18 giugno 2017: tanti auguri, Sir Paul!

Con quest’ultimo nasce l’album Flowers In The Dirt.
