Joint projects and assisted publications

Through joint commissions, IAML co-sponsors with other international associations, notably the IMS (International Musicological Society), four major bibliographical series for music scholars and librarians ("the four Rs"). These are all produced by cooperation between national groups and an international centre responsible for collecting and coordinating national contributions. The series may be ordered from their respective publishers.

RISM

Répertoire international des sources musicales (RISM) / International Inventory of Musical Sources (rismiaml [dot] info (email)) is an international non-profit making organization with the objective of describing adequately the sources of music worldwide.

Independent RISM working groups in different countries are cataloguing mainly music prints before 1800 and music manuscripts after 1600 but sometimes also libretti, etc. Their results are united in the RISM Zentralredaktion in Frankfurt am Main and prepared for publication. RISM publishes printed cataloques and the database of music manuscripts appearing yearly on CD-ROM, for the first time in 1995.

RISM has three subseries:

Serie A/I (Bärenreiter-Verlag, Kassel)

RILM

Répertoire international de littérature musicale (RILM) / International Inventory of Musical Literature (rilmiaml [dot] info (email)) is an ongoing abstracted bibliographic database of scholarly writings on music published around the world, covering all document types and all music and music-related subjects. Over half a million records cover music literature since 1967, with retrospective coverage of conference proceedings dating back to 1835. RILM is available in annual printed volumes, online (through EBSCO, OCLC, Ovid/SilverPlatter, ProQuest, and NISC), and on CD-ROM (through NISC). RIdIM

Répertoire international d'iconographie musicale (RIdIM) / International Inventory of Musical Iconography (ridimiaml [dot] info (email)) documents visual materials relating to music. RIdIM publishes catalogues, studies, a RIdIM/RCMI newsletter, the RIdIM/RCMI inventory of music iconography series, and sponsors a scholarly yearbook, Imago musicae (published by Duke University Press and Bärenreiter-Verlag). The RIdIM/RCMI (Research Center for Musical Iconography) is located at the City University of New York.

RIPM

Répertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM) / Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals (1800-1950) (ripmiaml [dot] info (email)) is the most recent of the four "repertories". Since 1987, it has produced approximately ten volumes per year offering access to a significant portion of the nineteenth- and early twentieth century musical press. The Répertoire international de la presse musicale series is published in print, on the internet, and on CD-ROM by the National Information Services Corporation (NISC), and on the internet by EBSCO, NISC and OCLC. The editorial headquarters for RIPM (The RIPM International Center) is affiliated with the University of Maryland at College Park and is located in Baltimore, Maryland. In the summer of 2006 RIPM will celebrate the publication of its two hundredth volume, a database containing 500,000+ annotated records, and the birth of the RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals.
