IAML Conference

In 2005 the activities of the Board of the Polish National Branch of IAML concentrated on organizing the IAML Annual Conference held at the National Library in Warsaw from 10 to 15 July 2005. Hosting the event for 350 participants from all over the world was helped by National Library employees of the Music Department and Sound Archives.

Arrangements for Music Librarians National Conference - New Board Election

Currently Music Libraries Section of the Polish Librarians' Association focuses on arranging a three-day national conference for music librarians, whose aim is to choose a new board for the Section. The conference is being organised together with the Sound Archive Section of the Polish Librarians' Association. It will take place in Ciążeń near Poznań in October this year.

Individual members' activities

National activities
Currently, the Board of the Music Libraries Section of the Polish Librarians Association consists of 9 members. The number was extended to establish the Organizational Committee for the IAML Conference.

International activities within IAML projects
Stanisław Hrabia, Vice President of the Section, took part in the work of the following committees: the Copyright Committee, the Outreach Committee and the Research Library Committee.

Fryderyk Chopin National Institute Library
The Fryderyk Chopin National Institute Library became a new IAML member.

RISM

In 2005 cataloguing projects were conducted at five RISM stations, four of which were carried out within the PIKaDo programme (Gdańsk, Wrocław, Opole, Warszawa), and one on RISM cataloguing cards in Szczecin. The information Centre for all RISM activities in Poland is the Polish RISM Centre run by Jolanta ByczkowskaSztaba and Elżbieta Wojnowska at the National Library in Warsaw. In 2005 the two RISM Centre employees were granted Ministry funds for examining musical sources:

  • J. Byczkowska-Sztaba was awarded the grant for the Polish Catalogue of Music Manuscripts -RISM
  • E. Wojnowska was awarded the grant for the study of tablatures of Legnica collection.

International cooperation within RISM

In November 2005 Polish RISM Centre hosted training for Živilė Časaitė from the Lithuanian National Library in Vilnus. The training was aimed at organising a RISM centre at the National Library in Vilnus.

Publications

The following publications were completed and published:

  1. Jubilee Book for the 40th anniversary of the Music Libraries Section at the Polish librarians' association: Music Libraries Section of the Polish Librarians Association - Polish National Branch of IAML. Jubilee Book dedicated to Maria Prokopowicz. Edited by Piotr Maculewicz and Andrzej Spóz, under cooperation with Stanisław Hrabia, Maria Wróblewska. Warszawa: Wydawnictwo SBP (Publishing House), 2005.
  2. The account of the IAML Annual Conference 2005 was published in Biuletyn Informacyjny Biblioteki Narodowej (National Library Information Bulletin) No. 3/174 2005 , pages 15-21, and in Przegląd Biblioteczny (Library Review). On 11 July 2005, an interview on the IAML Conference was broadcast by Programme Two of Polish Radio.
  3. The Polish IAML Branch website, www.iaml.pl, is edited by Piotr Maculewicz. After the conference he will prepare the Polish Music Libraries Section of the Polish Librarians' Association website.

Maria Prokopowicz (1916-2006)

Maria Prokopowicz passed away at the age of 90 on 2 April 2006 in Warsaw. She was a co-founder and a long-time chairperson of the Board of the Music Libraries Section of the Polish Librarians' Association, the Polish National Branch of IAML, and a long-time co-editor of the periodical Biblioteka Muzyczna (Music Library). She also held for many years the position of director of the Music Department at the National Library in Warsaw. She was awarded an honorary membership of the Polish Librarians' Association. She was a great animator of music librarianship in Poland.
