"Köchel & Sons" - a new Wikipedia page for the composers' work catalogues

Heikki Poroila suggested a new Wikepedia page for composers' work catalogues, which should be maintained by music librarians.

Hi Everyone,

I am sorry I am slow to join this discussion. It is very interesting and useful. I appreciate all of the links and ideas that have been offered.

I do not suggest that MusRef is the answer to every need, but I would like to add to the discussion that in MusRef I do maintain a substantial listing of composer thematic catalogues and composer's websites (which sometimes include lists of works).

Here, for example is the results page for a search on the category of "Composer Thematic Catalogue - Bibliography"

http://cdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/results.php?&CISOGRID=main,A,0;title,A,1;datete,A,0;descri,A,0;typa,A,0;20;title,none,none,none,none&CISORESTMP=results.php&CISOVIEWTMP=item_viewer.php&CISOMODE=grid&CISOROOT=/MusicRef2&CISOOP1=all&CISOFIELD1=keywor&CISOBOX1=&CISOOP2=all&CISOFIELD2=descri&CISOBOX2=Composer+Thematic+Catalogue-Bibliography&CISOOP3=all&CISOFIELD3=typa&CISOBOX3=&CISOOP4=all&CISOFIELD4=ifcrit&CISOBOX4=

If for some reason that link is not working, here is the link to the MusRef search page:

http://lib.byu.edu/sites/musref/search/

From there, use the "Category" drop down menu and select "Composer Thematic Catalogue - Bibliography"

The home page to MusRef also has a "Quick Link" to more than 150 composer websites, and I am adding more on a regular basis.

Of course it is also possible to search for a specific composer.

I do not want to suggest that a wiki or other lists are not useful or needed. I welcome related efforts and will make sure that MusRef points to all of them. I will also highlight them in the MusRef blog as they develop.

Best,
David Day

It seems me that this is a fairly small project that should be adopted and maintained by IAML.  I propose that rather than using Wikipedia we collectively compose a master list that can be mounted as a wiki on iaml.info.  Once completed maintenance should be fairly minimal and open to any registered member who has the time and inclination.

This would I'm sure be a good 'driver' to IAML's website for librarians and musicians.  We could easily add a link to the Wikipedia entry along the lines of: "For a professionally curated list of thematic ctalogues see here ..."

We do however need to decide exactly which information needs to be captured and the overall layout.  There already seems to be a reasonable degree of consensus.  Would the institutions with their separate list be prepared to donate them to the greater IAML effort?

(Many thanks also to Heikki for raising this in the first place.

Having read the exchange between Clemens and Patrizia (on iaml-l) I thought that I should clarify that the link I proposed would be one of those listed as a reference at the bottom of the article.  I'm sure we could find a form of words at the reference point that would pass Wikipedia's guidelines.  If we could ensure that a good set of meta tags were included in the HTML for the list page it might well climb quite high in Google's rankings.
