IAML (Australia) sponsored a daylong seminar at the Symposium of the International Musicological Society in Melbourne, in July 2004. The seminar was entitled “Music, Technology and Research” and was convened by IAML (President) Georgina Binns, and Robyn Holmes and Marie-Louise Ayres from the National Library of Australia. The program included seven speakers from Australia, United States and England. Colleagues Stephen Davison from UCLA, Mary Wallace Davison from Indiana University, Barbara Dobbs McKenzie from RILM, and John Rink from Royal Holloway, London were key speakers. A forum discussion also took place, in which eight stakeholders spoke passionately about their needs, hopes and the future of music and technology. It was a very successful day of learning, networking and exposing the needs of researchers and other stakeholders to the possibilities of technology and the current state of activity in our archives and libraries. A webpage with presentations and notes from the day will be available shortly.
The 2004 Biennial Conference will be held in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory in September this year. It is being held in conjunction with IAML (New Zealand) branch and the Australasian Sound Recording Association. The theme is: Music in a Digital World: Directions, Initiatives, Collaborations. This joint conference meets an aim of IAML (Australia) to collaborate with other organizations. We are pleased to be able to work with our New Zealand colleagues and those in the sound recording industry.
Almost 136 kilograms of books and sound recordings were sent to the library of the School of Music at Maseno University, Kenya this year.
Membership of the branch stands at 39 individual and 23 institutional members.
