In the year since the Amsterdam conference, the Russian IAML Branch, which is also a part of the Russian Libraries Association, has been working in two main directions: in Russia and outside Russia. A number of Russian libraries have been busy with digitizing their unique collections. The librarians worked hard on the film about Russian music libraries and archives that was shown at the Plenary Session. The materials for the film were collected from all over the country, and the work was very interesting for the librarians.

The IAML Russian Branch has worked on a number of projects over the past year. Because IAML Russia is also a Section of Russian Library Association, we have concentrated our efforts on the directions that are of priority for Russian libraries:

  • Creating digital computer collections

  • Adapting the Russian new copyright law in libraries

  • Inculcating new technologies.

Conferences and master-classes on these subjects were conducted in March and May this year in Moscow and Ul’yanovsk.

The Russian branch of IAML considers the preparatory work for the Moscow IAML Congress to be its primary goal. All of the main points have been settled. We have assigned members to the Organizing Committee, made up the programme of the Congress, and have decided on the venue. We hope that all these will contribute to the Moscow Congress being organized in a proper way. There is also much work to be done, and those of you who have already organized annual IAML conferences, are aware what it is like.

In the last year IAML Russian Branch held at the Taneev Library a two-week professional skill improvement course for music librarians. This specialized course had not been held for many years. Training was given to thirty music librarians from seventeen regions and towns of Russia. The course was very useful, but we would like to work on improvements for future courses.

As usual, we have held two traditional archive conferences, one at the Taneev Library of Moscow State Conservatoire and the other at the library of the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire.
